What is Passer Anyway?

One of the most frequent questions we get is what is Passer? Typically, we give the short answer to the question, which is: it is Latin for sparrow. The long answer is more about who we are and want to be as a company.

Anyone who really knows me knows that I like birds. While I would not consider myself a true birder, I am “that guy” that likes to sit and watch the action at a bird feeder. There is something mesmerizing and peaceful about watching birds. Their colors, beautiful sounds, effortless flight, and innate ability to find food are all incredible. It is no coincidence that when my wife and I got married in the summer of 2012 We adopted Matthew 6:26 as our life verse. Which says: “ Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”.

Not only has this become the verse for our marriage but it has become the verse for our business. While it is not always easy in times with such uncertainty it has allowed us extra opportunities to value relationships and people.

About two years before our business began, I was reading an article about how the common sparrows were hunted down and killed in Europe. This was during a time that sickness was spreading rapidly through the continent. The thought was that these birds were somehow responsible simply because there were so many of them and they seemed to be everywhere. As we know birds will nest just about anywhere. When they began to kill off these common birds, they noticed that there became an abundance of bugs. These bugs were getting into food, bedding, and all areas of the home. Ultimately, compounding the issues they were already having. The people realized the birds were not the problem. In fact, the birds were helping with the problem.

We feel that this is a great metaphor for the life. The common things that we overlook or view as a nuisance are actually necessary for the success of the ecosystem. We see this all to often in the way people are valued. Our goal is not only to see the value in others but to call that out of them. One of our biggest goals with this company is to use our success to help bring out the value in others. We not only believe this relates to the way we interact with people but believe this relates to our work as well. We believe that our craftsmanship and the value our company brings will add to and bring out the value in others as well. We also are big believers in giving back. We have a particular soft spot for the overlooked needs veterans are facing. As our company grows our goal is to create opportunities to help those around us.
